Application of Natural Fiber Reinforced Composites in Harsh Environments
(ANACOMPO)

Purpose of the project

The main purpose of the project is to mobilize research efforts in northern communities of Sweden and Finland for exploring all the potential of composites made out of completely bio-based constituents (fibers and polymers).

Project also intends to carry out joint research activities and disseminate its results to the industries which are looking for innovative eco-efficient materials and structures in order to reach economical as well as environmental benefits.

The proposed project is meant to stimulate cooperation between Finnish and Swedish R&D performers and industries within northern communities.

The R&D work in this project will focus on developing eco-efficient lightweight composite materials and the main actions carried out can be grouped within 3 main tasks:

  • SELECTION and CHARACTERIZATION OF CONSTITUENTS
  • STRUCTURAL DESIGNING and PRODUCTION of DEMONSTRATORS
  • TRAINING and DEMONSTRATIONS

Objectives

The main objective of the work is to generate comprehensive research data on eco-efficient composites in order to be able to advance the use of these in various industrial sectors. The target industries are located geographically in northern Sweden and northern Finland.

Complementary goals to reach the main objective are as follows:

  • to find suitable sizing chemicals and composite production technology for reduction of moisture uptake of natural fiber reinforcement
  • to research the possibility to use biodegradable polymers in harsh environments (UV, moisture, sea water salinity, etc)
  • demonstrate to the companies, especially SMEs, the technologies of production of composites using new materials
  • to train companies for them to be able to implement new materials and technologies for their purposes
  • to stimulate cooperation between Finnish and Swedish R&D performers in the northern communities
  • to strengthen the expertise in the area of eco-efficient composites, within the regions involved in the project
  • mobilize efforts and exchange best practices

Project duration: 2010-2012. Project budget: 900 000€.
The main financier is: INTERREG IVA North.
